74 Lakeview Avenue by Barb McIntyre is a great book! The story begins with a group of women who have signed up to take an autobiography class meeting, then come to the second class and find out that it has been canceled. These women want to share their stories so much that they decide to meet in their own homes and every night they meet a few people read their stories. Each woman whose story is told has a very unique perspective and take on life, along with their relationships. Many similarities show up, especially marriage, children, and other relationships. There are also some men who share their stories, and they give insight to how males may see things. The ending really brings it all together, with a surprising conclusion when the owner of the building these women live in tell his story.
I gave this book 4 out of 4 stars because the author is able to take on so many different characters so well. Each character sounds unique and is very easy to connect to in each story, as the author knows how to get the reader to sympathize with each character. Each man or woman tells things from their point of view and why they see things the way they are. All of the stories told, however, end in happiness. The owner of the building at the end gives some reasons for why this may be, which are all valid reasons that I did not even think about while reading the book.
This book was very easy and quick to read because of how well it was written and how well the characters were developed. Each story was not too long, but long enough to grow a relationship with each one. The reader feels each character’s frustrations, sadness, and happiness. Some of the characters hate being mothers and wives, while others love it.
I think men can even enjoy this book and maybe even learn something from it on how many women may think. Many men do not realize how some women think and why they act like they do, as shown in the book, but if they read this they may be able to understand women better. Women may also learn about men as it gives men’s perspectives also, and can apply that to their current relationships.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wishes to examine relationships that one may have and how different people are in common circumstances. It is also a fun book just to read, and was much better than I imagined. The book flowed very well and I was able to read it in just four days. The whole book was well put together and the ending is great, and really makes it seem like the end of the book is real and the man who owns the apartment is real.
