Review by Mihaela25 -- Veil of Secrecy
In " Veil of Secrecy" by Margaret Franceschini history repeats itself as estranged mother and daughter go through similar experiences with heartbreaking consequences. First love becomes a life-altering event, for both Julie and Marina, marked by unbearable pain and lifelong longing for the newborn babies given up at birth.
The secret starts with Julie, an ambitious teenage girl in a small fishing town; Julie becomes pregnant with an older, married man who refuses any responsibility for the unplanned pregnancy. Therefore, Julie finds herself compelled to follow her parents' advice: her pregnancy is to remain a secret and baby is to be adopted. The Fold, a remote convent, becomes Julie's temporary home and school, allowing her both to continue her studies and enabling her pregnancy to progress and the newborn to be adopted discreetly. When time comes, Julie surrenders her baby with guilt and sadness, feeling emptiness and loss and promising herself they would meet again one day. As the newborn is taking away and Julie resumes her life fulfilling her dream of becoming a journalist, the threads of the veil begin to be woven.
Sixteen years later, Marina's story adds to the secret that started with Julie. Just like her mother's teenage love, Marina's naive first love ends suddenly due to unexpected pregnancy and father's lack of support. Once again, the Fold comes to the rescue of the adolescent soon to become a mother: her pregnancy is carried to term and baby is adopted quietly, allowing Marina to return to her studies pursuing her dream of becoming a journalist, just like her mother. Giving up her newborn, Marina feels her arms empty and numb with no little one to hold anymore, questions her decision and vows her heart would be filled again only when reunited with her baby.
As years pass, leaving behind their teenage pregnancies and adopted babies, both Julie and Marina move on with their lives. However, as the story unfolds, the author brings mothers and daughters together without any of them being aware of it. Through masterful twists, Marina learns that her fiance's little sister is actually her daughter while Julie meets her daughter during an appointment with a young writer whose manuscript she is considering for publication. Nevertheless, both Julie and Marina face an unforgiving destiny as reconciliation with the babies they gave up for adoption is out of their reach, yet the overwhelming pain of losing a child takes its toll a second time. As the hidden relationships are revealed, the threads of the veil become untwined without any other secret to guard.
"Veil of Secrecy by Margaret Franceschini can be an emotional reading; whoever has been deceived in love or is mourning the loss of a child can find themselves in this book. I do reccomend the book and I rate " Veil of Secrecy" as 4 out of 4 , for its unpredictable turns of events which makes it engaging and enthralling.
