The Texas Twist by John Vorhaus is a comedic mystery following the adventures of con man Radar Hoverlander, his girlfriend Allie and right hand man Vic. This is the second book in the series, but having not read the first book, I didn't that this diminished my reading experience. The author establishes who the characters are in the first few chapters and quickly introduces the main plot. However the plot is never quite what it seems as more and more information is revealed.

Radar has been in the game for so long it's begun to lose its appeal. With Allie pregnant he sees this as the opportunity for a new start. After returning home from their latest con their neighbour comes to them with the miraculous news that there may be a cure for her sons rare disease. Radar is immediately suspicious of the man who claims to have the miracle cure. As they delve deeper into who this man is, and what his motives may be, all is not quite what it seems.

Having never read a book by John Vorhaus I was pleasantly surprised. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book for the easy flow, fantastic characters and the authors knowledge of the con world in which the book is set. What usually sells me on a good book is how well I can connect with the characters, and in this area the book didn't disappoint. The easy banter between Radar and Allie was wonderfully written as they tried to decide whether the baby was a boy or a girl, what they would name it, and Radar's insistence on being as involved in the pregnancy as possible. Despite the main focus of the plot the book was essentially centered around the major changes to the lives of the main characters.

There were so many twists and turns in this book that you never quite knew who was the con and who was the mark, what was real and what was fabricated. We never quite knew who knew what and what each characters ultimate end game was. The plot kept me guessing until the last chapter and despite thinking I knew how it would end, there were still elements of surprise that paid off.

I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 and would absolutely recommend it. It targets multiple genres making it accessible to all book lovers. The end is satisfying yet I am still eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
