Review by MadalynMA -- Provoked To Anger by Cheray Gardison
Provoked to Anger is a Christian novel written by Cheray Gardison following the story of two young teenagers, Marissa and Jeremy.
Marissa and Jeremy’s paths cross when they both attend a late classmate’s funeral. Where they begin talking and getting acquainted with each other, causing Jeremy to fall in love with Marissa. However, Marissa rejects his affections and leaves Jeremy feeling hurt and confused. He asks his mother for help with her, but his mother instead dismisses him to go out, leaving him feeling alone in the world. Soon after he attempts to commit suicide by shooting himself. This then leads Jeremy to being put in a coma and venturing on a journey through hell. Meanwhile, Marissa deals with her mother’s anger after she admits to sleeping with her mother’s boyfriend. Her mother who never cared about her before is enraged by her daughter’s actions and threatens to throw her out on the streets. This leaves Marissa convinced her mother hates her and despises her existence. Due to this, Marissa is left feeling vulnerable and ends up being kidnapped and sold into human trafficking. Their stories of overcoming the obstacles of life as teenagers are filled with rejection, loneliness, and pain.
One of my favorite things about the book was the depiction of the character’s struggles. The situations they went through were very realistic and relatable to teenagers today. Also, their reactions were reasonable for the situations. Even though I didn’t agree with some of the character’s actions, it showed that behaviors are reflected on what is being felt and sometimes teenagers can make rash decisions. For example, when Jeremy was feeling rejected by his mother and Marissa, he decided to shoot himself. This shows that although that he was feeling a lot of pain, even if it wasn’t very noticeable, and due to this pain, he made a decision based on how he felt.
Another thing I liked about the book was the portrayal of relationships. I liked the message of friendship in the book. The friendships were very supporting and healthy unlike the relationships between family. Marissa and Jeremy's relationships with their mothers weren't very healthy. However, their friendships made up for the loss of the love from their mothers. I think that the quote, "Friends are the family you choose" is evident in the Marissa's and Jeremy's friendships.
This book was very well written. It was clear that it was professionally edited. There were only a few grammar and spelling mistakes I noticed when reading it.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The portrayal of the issues a lot of teenagers go through and their behaviors was phenomenal. Many of the issues addressed were mental illness, abuse, and dysfunctional relationships. However, I would like to mention that there is a lot of profanity and mentions of sexual abuse and child molestation in the book. So, I caution those who are uncomfortable with said topics. Though, I do highly recommend this book to those who enjoy young adult novels and those looking for a good book to read.
