Review by its_giddy -- Veil of Secrecy
“Veil of Secrecy” by Margaret Franceschini is an amazing book with great twists and turns that revolve around the story Julie and her daughter Marina. As great writers and philosophers say that “history repeats itself”, Margaret Franceschini applied this quote writing of this book. Marina had to go through all the pain here mother experienced.
Back in the 20th century, in the year 1950 there was a sixteen-year-old woman called Julie. Julie had big dreams of being a journalist and living in the big city. She was living in small fishing village in Newfoundland. Julie was a writer and she also loved looking after the environment. As years passed, Julie had an affair with her older married bakery boss and unfortunately she got pregnant. Julie felt like she had crashed her dreams furthermore her bakery boss was not ready to take up his responsibilities and this made Julie to be so frustrated that she had to disclose to her parents about her pregnancy. Luckily, Julie had supportive parents and they agreed to keep her pregnancy a secret. They also advised her that her pregnancy will ruin her future therefore she had to go to the Fold, a convert in Nova Scotia. The Fold provided her with conducive environment to deliver her baby and look after until the baby was stable for adoption. When time came she surrendered her daughter in pain and she moved on with her life pursuing her dream career of being a journalist.
Time flies and sixteen years down the line we meet Julie’s daughter Marina Cynthia. She was so ambitious and she had a dream of being a journalist just like her mother. Unlike Julie, Marina had wealthy parents and they lived a luxurious life. Unfortunately Marina became a victim of teenage love and just like her mother she got pregnant. Her father was so disappointed in her and couldn’t give her the support that she needed, therefore she was sent to the Fold. Marina did not know that her biological mother was in a similar situation sixteen years ago. Marina delivered her baby who was later adopted and she continued pursuing her dreams of becoming a journalist. It was painful giving up her baby.
What I like about this book is that Margret Franceschini was so creative that she made book have great twists and came up with many incidents that coincide, like she narrates how Julie and her daughter got pregnant at a young age and both had to go to the Fold where they delivered and later surrendered their babies for adoption. They further move on with their lives pursuing their dream career of being journalists. Furthermore both parents had to live with pain for not being forgiven by their daughters for giving them up for adoption. The author has also used dialogue and descriptive language to develop characters. This book is well edited and I did not find any error in it therefore it deserves to be rated 4 out of 4 stars.
This book is so emotional but it has a powerful encouraging message therefore I would recommend it to young teenagers who have dreams of being successful and also people who have lost their children.
