Strong Heart follows four unlikely companions as they trek through national parkland in America to find the resting place of Tom’s grandfather. Nearing 70 himself, Tom is joined by his friend William, William’s daughter Myra, and Tom’s estranged granddaughter Sarah. As they travel through the forest, they learn more about each other and the history of Native People.

Although I initially found this book quite difficult to get into, having no prior knowledge of Native American tribes or the origin of modern humans, I was ensnared by the compelling narrative and the switch in periods. Charlie Sheldon keeps the reader on their toes with the two storylines, making both distinct in their style and showing his versatility in writing two contrasting styles of story, whilst weaving in similarities between them. He fills the present-day storyline with drama and the characters display both likeable and dislikeable characteristics, making them well rounded and developed. I found myself so invested in the character arcs that I audibly gasped out loud in some of the more dramatic moments. There were also times when I wanted to shout at the characters in their hot-headedness, which shows just how well written they were!

At first, I found the characters difficult to emphasise with the reader is thrown straight into the beginning of the hike, without the chance to get to know the characters beforehand. I ultimately found that this made the novel even more compelling to me, as I was learning about the characters as they revealed more and more of themselves along the hike. I found the beginning of the boat journey a bit slow, but as the speed picked up I enjoyed it more. My biggest issue with the novel was the lack of resolution. Although I can understand the potential for a sequel, I felt as though it ended before anything at all had been tied up. I will be interested to see whether the sequel picks up at the same moment this book ends, or if there is a passing of time which conveniently encompasses the difficulty of removing the characters from their current position.

The text is exceptionally edited, I didn’t notice a single typo or error in the entire 270 pages. The switch between present-day and prehistoric times is clear, and the sense of storytelling during the prehistoric times is enthralling and there is a clear shift in mood. There are some expletives, but nothing likely to offend. There are references made to sexual activity, both consensual and sexual abuse of a child. Neither of these are detailed, but it is reported in speech between other characters.

Overall I feel this book is appropriate for teenagers and young adults who are interested in a mystery-adventure book, whilst also learning about the scientific and historical facts tied to the origins of modern people. There are some mentions of the discrimination faced by Native Americans which is why I advised this age group, alongside references to sexual abuse and some violent death. I give this book 4 out of 4 stars due to the gripping storyline and Sheldon’s masterful way of writing.

Thanks for the great review! I read this book last year and I enjoyed it very much. I agree about the ending though! Good job!
