CJ McCarter appears to have the perfect life. She is a successful economist that has recently been promoted to President of Ryson-Scott University. CJ shows no signs of stopping when it comes to her professional growth, as she's constantly brainstorming innovative programs to add to Ryson-Scott's curriculum. Her tenacity and unparalleled work ethic make her a respected leader among her peers. In addition, she is married to her college sweetheart, Trey, with whom she shares a college-aged daughter. Trey lives a 5-hour train ride from Ryson-Scott, where he focuses on biochemistry. Her commuter marriage seems perfect to everyone on the outside, but in reality, her marriage is far from successful.

Sensing the toil that long-distance was taking on her marriage, CJ attempts to repair the relationship by surprising Trey and setting aside time to focus on their marriage. Her efforts are not reciprocated and she's left feeling even more insecure about their relationship. That insecurity begins to fester, ultimately leading her to believe that Trey has found solace with an attractive female graduate student that he seems to be spending most of his time with.

The weight of this rejection is the catalyst that leads to the breakdown of different aspects of CJ's life, professionally and personally. She begins to make choices that threaten to dismantle the legacy and reputation she has worked so hard to build.

The Assignment, written by Don Chance, is a book filled with intricate character development, vivid descriptions, and intriguing plot lines. Once you start reading, you won't be able to put the book down until you get to the end and find out what ultimately happens to CJ. Chance has created a character, CJ, that everyone can identify with to some extent, which plays a key role in the success of this novel.

My favorite part of the book was the pace at which the plot developed, it completely engrossed my attention and I could not put the book down. I especially enjoyed how the author would leave small hints that foreshadowed the ending, so you could make guesses about the ending but still be completely surprised with how the end played out. In addition, CJ's character development was phenomenal. It was extremely interesting to watch CJ deal with the repercussions of her actions and ultimately grow as a person. I truly did not have a least favorite aspect of this novel!

The Assignment was masterfully edited, as I didn’t catch any errors. With the intricate plot and fascinating characters, I am confident in rating it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy thrillers, witty characters, romance, and interesting plot developments. I would not recommend it to young readers as there are scenes that detail sexual assault, violence, and explicit sex.
