[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Roxanne And Chuck Eat And . . . (a story of food and sex)" by M. L. Thor.]

Roxanne and Chuck Eat and.... is theoretically an erotic short story and as a book that mixes food into an erotic tale, I was relatively interested to see how it would turn out. However, I was left with the strong impression that there is meant to be a sequel (possibly a number of sequels) as the entire story appears to consist of the introduction of the titular characters. For a 61 page novella, one expects to move fairly quickly through events so that a resolution is reached within the small number of pages. On the contrary, the book moves sluggishly through quite a large amount of back story, to end most abruptly without any resolution at all.

As briefly as possible so as to avoid summarising all the main points of the entire story; there are five main characters, Roxanne, Gunter, Chuck, Sadie and Ronald. Gunter and Sadie are Chefs; they bring the food part of this novella. Roxanne, Chuck and Ronald work for a horror/pornography film production company. Everyone appears to be obsessed with sex and all conversations lead to sex and/or memories of sex.

As this is an erotic novel, it is not surprising that there is a lot of sex; what is surprising is how badly written the sex scenes are and how non-existent the rest of the story is. To be fair, the main characters spend a surprising amount of time on introspection, in an attempt at shovelling a little romantic intrigue into the story; unfortunately the only real effect of this is to take up space, leaving no room for advancement of the narrative to a resolution point.

In addition to this there are numerous instances of poor or incorrect word usage that broke whatever concentration I had on the story. I also found it hard to believe that the character named Gunter was German (as was stated many times in the book) when the correct German spelling (i.e. Günther) was not used for his name. With some irony, use of the anglicised spelling simply seemed to emphasise to me the lack of finishing and revising that had gone into this book.

In summary, I would not recommend this book to anyone, so I give it a rating of 1 out of 4 stars. There is much much better erotica out there. This book entirely failed to pique my interest in food or in any other way.

I was surprised by this review. If I had not read it, maybe I would have tried out the story. The title caught my eye... But with this review... i think I'll pass.

Sorry the story had the effect of food poisoning on you, but I guess that happens sometimes. I’d like to offer a clarification and correct two inaccuracies. I may not have included this in the review request here—I thought I did— but on Amazon, Roxanne and Chuck is called “The first course in an ongoing series . . .” In other words, it’s part one of a larger work. No matter. I don’t get the impression you’ll be back for part two :) Roxanne and Chuck work for a direct-to-DVD production company that specializes in horror films. Pornography is never mentioned. And Gunter is an anglicized version of Günter (anglicized in that I left the umlaut off), not Günther. For example, Günter Grass, the recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. Thanks.
