Review by Crcraig -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a fascinating, action-packed adventure story set in the Olympic National Park in the state of Washington. The tale presents the legends of the ancient people of North America and one modern-day thirteen-year-old’s quest to prove herself to her family.
Sarah is dropped off at the doorstep of her grandfather, Tom, after both her father and Tom’s ex-wife find they cannot handle the defiant teen. Tom is preparing to leave on a camping trip with his friends, William and Myra, in order to return an ancient dart thrower to the Park. Rather than leave her alone, they are forced to take her with them.
When Sarah sees and draws a long-extinct bear, the others doubt her. She runs away in anger and steals the dart thrower. The rescue hunt ends when she reappears with an even greater tale of time spent with an ancient prehistoric people of the region. With them, she learned how to use the dart thrower with great accuracy.
Sarah is returned to her grandmother. When she runs away and returns to Tom, they return to the Park to find the dart thrower Sarah stole. Once there, they are threatened by a group of surveyors planning to mine the area. Then forest fires block their route back. What might Sarah have learned from the ancient people that will guide them?
I give this book a 4 out of 4 rating because of the excellent story line and constantly changing drama. I could easily imagine myself there in the mountains with Sarah and the group. The editing is very good with only a few minor errors. There is no profanity and no erotic scenes or language. A couple of the bear fights are a little graphic but nothing that most modern audiences will find offensive.
This is a very well written and easy to read book that will keep you in suspense until the very end. The author has researched the material and presents his theory of ancient migration in a believable tale. The idea of visions from the past are part of the Native American culture and add to Sarah’s finding her family.
The best audience for this book is more difficult. Teenage girls will enjoy the tale of a thirteen-year-old girl and might relate to the defiant side of Sarah. As an adult, I enjoyed the book for the previously stated reasons.
I think this book would make a great movie. It has adventure, suspense, history, and the beautiful setting of the Olympic National Park. Read it and see it you agree.
