Official Review: Cold Mercy by Trevor A.
Cold Mercy, by Trevor A, is a story of revenge. When Cedric's uncle, Blackbird, is murdered, Cedric is determined to avenge his death. He does whatever it takes to get back at The Rudeboys, a Jamaican gang he believes is responsible. He has lots of friends to help and often has run-ins with both the police and the FBI. There are many twists and turns along the way to keep the reader guessing.
What I liked most about this book was the wide variety of characters and viewpoints. The majority of the book is from Cedric's point of view, but there are chapters through the eyes of supporting characters as well. This included Cedric's friends, Rudeboys, police officers, and FBI agents. This gave more information to the reader since Cedric didn't always know what was going on. The reader was privy to more sides of the story.
What I disliked most about the book was the violence. It was a little too detailed at times. In one scene, a young man is tortured. Instead of just mentioning this fact, the reader gets a graphic explanation of how a particular body part was removed. In another scene, a young woman is murdered in front of her toddler. I wish the toddler had been left out of it. Some violence I can handle, but I felt the author took it too far a few times.
This book was also filled with errors, unfortunately. There were so many that it became distracting. This included misspelled words, apostrophes used wrong, question marks misused and other grammar errors. It was difficult to read sometimes.
This book is written for an adult audience. Besides the violence I already mentioned, there is tons of foul language, drugs, murder, graphic sex scenes, and detailed rape scenes. So, children and teenagers shouldn't read it. Those who don't like to read about violence should skip it, too. It would appeal to those who like fast-paced thrillers and a little mystery.
I would rate Cold Mercy 3 out of 4 stars. I can't give it a 4 because there were far too many errors. I wouldn't rate it any lower, though, because I loved the story. I enjoyed the characters and wanted to find out how things worked out for them. I couldn't put the book down.
Cold Mercy was a not so straightforward tale of revenge. I highly recommend it to those who are fans of thrillers!
