This review is about a book called Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. This book is a mix of scientific data and Native American lore. Facts and fiction. The main character turns up as a surprise in chapter one. She is a granddaughter to an older man named Tom. He did not know of her existence until then. Her name is Sarah and she is 13 years old.

This book was very well edited. I found no typos, misspelled words, and no erotic scenes. Read with caution if you are offended by profane language. The profane words begin on page 3 and continue throughout the entire book. I am giving this novel a 4 out of 4 .

I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the Native American culture living on the reservation in the Pacific Northwest. The characters went backpacking through Olympic National Park and the scenery was described so the reader could picture the beauty of the mountains and rivers. After Sarah disappears from the backpacking trip for eight days then reappears she has the most bizarre story that doesn't seem to make sense. As the story develops the reader learns that Sarah is part Native American which explains where she has been during the time she was missing. It all makes sense at the end of the book.

I enjoyed learning about the animals that roamed the earth at the end of the last Ice Age. There was a description of a small-faced bear that was huge and could kill an adult with one swipe of their paw. There was also a variety of an extremely large cat that had enormous teeth. There were packs of wolves that were very violent and brutal. The natives were very afraid of all the giant animals. The people of this time period ate a lot of seals, deer, and fish.

The novel was very interesting in combining scientific data with Native lore. To date a native artifact, a small sliver was removed and taken to a Siberian university to be carbon dated. The artifact was too old to be dated but it was made of mammoth bone. It was used after the last Ice Age around 60,000 years ago. It proves, in theory, that the Natives were in the U.S. long before anyone else came to North America.

I hope all of these snippets from the story are extremely entertaining and that it doesn't give away too much information. I would recommend this novel to anyone but expressly to someone who wants to learn about the long-ago history of the Native Americans. It would take some research to find out how much of the story is truth or fiction. Either way, this novel is a good read and I recommend it to all ages.
