Big Shot Bill: An Inspirational Short Story by D. Darrell Turner is about fictional Billy Bookman, a washed up professional golfer struggling to find his way after his wife’s death. He used to be a legend in golf and now he loathes to play. He seems to have lost his zest for life, so in hopes of bringing him out of his sorrows a few of his old pals come together to help him get back on his feet, back to the sport he once loved, and back to being “Big Shot Bill”.

Most of the story is told through casual dialogue between friends. The author’s conversation style is humorous and delightful in his word choice, especially in slang words and phrases. I could visualize all these conversations taking place. They don’t seem to be contrived efforts to move the story along, but instead glimpses of the man’s regular day to day life, after his glory days.

However, the story could have benefited from the author highlighting Billy’s path to healing, instead of having his character plainly state his conclusions in the last chapter. The previous six chapters slowly built up the landscape of Billy Bookman’s depressed, post prime golf days and leaves us right as he abruptly turns a corner. He gives the readers a quick briefing on his revelations only to end the storyline a few sentences later. Had the plot developed with this additional insight into Billy’s recovery, it would have moved readers to a greater degree. Further development in this area would have made this a 4 out of 4 stars in addition to a few writing mechanical and word choice tweaks. For this reason, I rated it a 3 out of 4 stars.

Even though this part of the plot development was missing, I still found Billy’s story encouraging and heartfelt. It would be best suited for readers that need an uplifting story right now when there are so many terrible things going on in our real lives. It is meant for readers that need to hear that we need to come together more than ever now and support one another.

Big Shot Bill is a story about healing and friendship. There is so much more that brings us together than pulls us apart. In all times of pain and suffering, it is your friends and loved ones that you can lean on to get you through it.
