Review by Nessa_girl78 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
A truly special tale of mining woes and Native American history is what you will find while reading Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. It is an intriguing novel that bounces back and forth between present time and ancient times in the Pacific Northwest, specifically Washington state.
When Tom’s ex-wife, Ruth, shows up on his doorstep with Sarah Cooley, who she claims is their 13-year-old granddaughter, he must make the decision whether to postpone his trip into the deep wilderness to honor the gravesite of his grandfather, Bob-Bob. He decides to proceed with the trip, which has many consequences as a result. Joining him is his friend William “’Eye”, and William’s daughter Myra.
Continuously running into site surveyors from a mining company makes things difficult for the group once Tom shows them the ancient Native American artifact that he carried with him on the journey, which he acquired many years ago from his grandfather. Was this artifact originally found by his grandfather, or did he place it in that wilderness? Tom doesn’t know, but he knows if the artifact is discovered, the site would become protected, preventing the mining company from moving forward with their plans. This would in turn protect a potential archeology dig site.
In the midst of all of this, Sarah disappears for several days and returns out of the blue with a story that is almost impossible to believe. Scientific data wars with native folklore when she shares her adventures. Could this all be connected somehow? Immerse yourself in this novel of adventure, intrigue, danger, and family relationships.
What I liked most about this book was the scientific data and the native folklore. I don’t know much about that geographical region, but I have vacationed there and thoroughly enjoyed it. I could easily picture the beauty of the wilderness in my mind based on the narrative. I also am very limited with my knowledge on Native American history, so I found that part of the story very interesting. On the other hand, I felt that the narrative dragged in some spots. A more streamlined dialogue would work wonders for this book.
I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found no grammar errors, which indicates that the book was professionally edited, and there was little to no profanity. I would recommend this book only to a mature audience as there is quite a bit of violence.
