[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Do I Know You?" by Pamela Cory.]
Do I Know You?, by Pamela Cory, is the second book in the Hassie Calhoun trilogy. It is a fictional romance novel that takes place in the 1970’s through the early 1980’s. Being a singer herself, the tale of Hassie Calhoun was born out of the author’s love for music.
This book continues the story of a talented singer, Hassie Calhoun. After personal trouble befalls her in Nevada, Hassie moves to New York to pursue her career as a singer. She is a single mom raising a young boy. During her struggles in New York, she marries her best friend who is a lawyer and secretly gay. Her marriage becomes a sham as she discovers hidden truths about Zach.
When Hassie’s mentor dies, she travels to London to attend the funeral. There she falls in love with a Royal Navy man. She extends her trip overseas and allows her husband to continue taking care of her son in New York. Hassie begins accepting singing jobs to stay in London. She is living two separate lives and must face the consequences of her questionable choices.
Although I haven’t read the first book in the series, I was able to grasp the plot and follow the storyline with no problem. Pamela Cory has written a descriptive, intense tale that pulled me in from the beginning. The main character, Hassie Calhoun, is a many-faceted character. Although she is very selfish at times, I found myself liking her and rooting for her. This is a testament to the author’s believable writing style. The other characters were just as unique and compelling, from a gay lawyer to a Royal Navy man in London. There were also some interesting scenes with Frank Sinatra.
The author did a great job of portraying the different historical eras. She included many different aspects of the 1970’s and the early 1980’s, including political and social issues ( even hinting at the beginning of the AIDS crisis). I enjoyed her detailed writing style.
The book was well-written and appears to be professionally edited. I found only a couple of minor grammatical errors. Based on my enjoyment of the story and the above observations, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find anything negative about this book.
I would recommend this to mature fans of fictional romance. I do not believe it is appropriate for young readers. There are several sexual situations, some alluding to transgender and gay scenarios. Also, there is profanity throughout the book.
Since this is the first book I have read in this series, I look forward to reading the first and third installments of the trilogy. I am sure the entire series is just as captivating as this book.
