Review by Tarbena45 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
I was hooked from the very first page and proceeded to read this book until my eyes became blurry, by which time I was amazed to find that I had read into the early hours. What a joy and I still had more of the book to read the next day!
Charlie Sheldon manages to weave a magical tale set amongst the rugged and spectacular scenery of the Olympic Mountains, which are located in the Pacific North West of the United States.
The story of Strong Heart begins by introducing the reader to a group of friends who are just about to set off on a hiking trip. They are on a mission to find Bob-Bob’s grave, who died whilst hiking with his grandson, Tom. The hike will take them through the National Park, along rough gorges, besides rivers, and through forests, taking in the splendor of this wilderness. The trip will take them several days, camping along the route. The group has an unexpected addition to the team as Tom’s obstreperous teenage granddaughter, Sarah, shows up, out of the blue, just as they are about to leave. After fraught discussions amongst the group, she was taken along, much to her disgust. They hitch their equipment on to their backs and they then set off.
The storyline has many threads that intertwine beautifully.
There are discussions and often heated disagreements about how far back in time the first humans arrived in this mountainous terrain, and where they came from. The arguments revolve around the archeological evidence and science versus tales and legends handed down through the generations.
Who is right?
We are introduced to the conflicts caused by an international mining company that would disrupt the way of life of the locals and destroying archaeological evidence in pursuit of their goals. They will use any means, including violence.
Who will win?
We are led on an enthralling voyage taking us back in time 1000’s of years, with Sarah, the granddaughter. She relates the adventure to her companions who have been joined by a Russian scientist.
Will anyone believe her on her return to the “real world?”
The characters spring to life on the page and are all fully portrayed. I could relate to every single one of them.
Who is my favourite character?
I shall tell you. It’s probably gutsy Myra.
Has Charlie Sheldon written other books?
Yes…hurrah!
I will happily rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the fantastic storytelling.
