The Book The Fat Lady’s Low, Sad Song is a novel and was written by Brian Kaufman. The book talks about one man who was able to help a lot more on his team while playing baseball. The story has a lot of emotions in it like happiness, anger, love, concern, etc. I do like the flow of the story and character developments. I also appreciate the use of baseball in the book where there are also a lot of happenings in dugouts and in playing fields.

Parker Westfall was called by Christopher Randall to play baseball for Fort Collins Miners. It wasn’t the call he was expecting but he needed to play to earn a living. Once in the team, he meets different people whom he was going to play with. He doesn’t want to talk about his age but he has skills when he plays. For one whole year, he has to work well with his teams and his manager to raise his team from the bottom. He didn’t just train and play with them. The team learned about each other and helped one another to improve and better themselves. Westfall even had to deal with a girl in the team and help her to be better at playing. He also needed to know how to talk to her.

The Book has the theme of teamwork but it’s not just the only theme I saw. I also saw the theme of being an influence even if you are already old and not considered successful. I appreciated how the protagonist was very helpful to everyone and helped in developing the other and the community. I also liked how some minor characters influenced the flow of the story as well. The place is in Fort Collins but they also go from other places to play baseball and the time is a whole season in baseball. The transition from one chapter to the next isn’t always directly connected. At times, the next chapter takes place hours after the previous chapter. I appreciate such an approach of the author considering that the whole story is focused on one whole season. The events that are out of the blue are great in helping with the flow of the story. A lot of elements in the story fit well and helped the way the story goes.

I like the set of characters in the book where there are different mixes of people in the team. There was one who was happy go lucky, one who was always right, and one who doesn’t care and many more. I did appreciate so much on the development in a certain character, where he was able to be influenced even if he was the one that was the one that the protagonist hates a lot. They went from a terrible team to a better one. Behind the story, I saw as well how some people are treated in the sports world. A lot of athletes were not able to be as successful if they can’t be in the major leagues. This book showed me the difficulty of what the minor leagues went through to reach the major leagues. It’s not just the opponents that they have to watch out.

Overall, Even though I found a couple of errors in grammar I am still going give this book a 4 out of 4. I can see the whole story well and skip the errors to view the whole picture. The errors don’t really damage the flow of the story. Also, there is also the book also has a lot of bad mouths in it. Though I’ll be honest I’m not much of a baseball guy but it would be good to read this book to know a little bit of how players could make it to the top. I did also appreciate that there are a lot of stats that are shown in the book about each player. I do recommend this to other readers and not just players. If you don’t understand some words that are used try to google them what it means so that you could imagine what happened in the game.
