Strong-Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story about growing up through the adventure. The book has two different stories, one is the present-day story, and the second one is Sarah’s story when she describes what has happened to her on her mystery trip. Reality gets mixed with magic. For those who love native myths and rituals, this book will be a great read.

Tom, his best friend William, and William’s daughter Myra, are getting ready for a hiking trip to visit Tom’s grandfather grave deep in the Olympic Peninsula wilderness of Washington State. There is a knock on the door while the storm is raging outside. Tom’s ex-wife Ruth shows at the doorstep, bringing their granddaughter Sarah. Tom and Sarah meet for the first time. Sarah is a troubled teenager, with trust issues and incapability to accept any form of authority. Tom and his friends are not sure if they should proceed with the trip, but nonetheless, they agree to take Sarah with them, rather than postponing the trip. Sarah was never backpacking through wilderness before, and she is not thrilled about it.

Shortly after the journey begins, Sarah goes missing for eight days. They find her, and she tells her story, which was hard to believe in, but too detailed to be imagined. Sarah sees a kind of a bear that went extinct a long time ago. She learns how to make atlatl and darts. She goes back in time and meets her land’s ancestors, experiencing the harsh reality of Native Americans’ lives. Through the adventure, Sarah grows and matures, earning the name “Strong – Heart”.

The readers are caught up in the story that takes us through astonishing images of the Olympic Peninsula wilderness, descriptions so vivid – it makes you feel like you are right there, exploring with the protagonists. Legends of the past create a mist of mystery, as we learn about Native Americans’ culture.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, simply because I was glued to the pages until the very end. It is well written, the story is very interesting and easy to follow. I find this book to be a bit educational, too. It contains historical facts about Native American culture. The writer’s descriptions of the Olympic Peninsula wilderness is excellent, it makes you want to go and visit by yourself. This book is not the usual time-traveling novel, it opens new horizons and leaves you craving for similar books.
