The book I read was Elsa by Simon Gandossi. It is a fictional novel about a young woman who wants to run away from Germany while it is in its downward spiral brought on by Hitler and the Nazi Regime.

Elsa’s parents are Nazis. Her father is of pretty high ranks. Elsa disagrees with them and anyone else who is a part of this party, but she must act as if she is a supporter. She has two best friends who share the same views as she does. One day she meets the daughter of a high-ranking officer (Raina) and falls in love at first sight. Along with her best friend Greta, Elsa and Raina begin to learn about what is really going on in Germany and the terrors that Jews, Handicaps and Homosexuals are facing.

Eventually Elsa and Raina are found out and sent to the very place they have been hearing about, concentration camps. Because of Elsa begins to be treated worse that others who are in the camp because the man in charge takes a special interest in her case. The book goes on to tell about the horrors Elsa witnesses and is a part of in the camp.

This was a very interesting read. It was hard to put down and I finished it in two days. The whole time you are wondering if Elsa is going to make it out alive, whether she will ever see Raina again, and what’s to become of her life. It was interesting because usually Holocaust related books are about the experiences of Jews who have survived; but this story had a completely different take on it because it was about a lesbian couple instead.

I would give this book a three out of four stars. It was very good and very compelling to read. The reason I would only give it a three is because there were a few scenes that I found to be a little too graphic. The writing was very clear and concise though and the topic was very interesting. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who takes an interest in this topic and time period.
