The book, Guardian of Deceit is a literary fiction written by William H. Coles. This is a story about the journey of an orphan teenager named Darwin Hastings who faces plenty of difficulties to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor.

The story begins with Darwin taking a flight to his relative’s place and there he meets his guide who later plays a crucial role in Darwin’s life. Luther is a renowned football player and a new legal guardian of Darwin who is rude, self-absorbed, and difficult to live with. There are other characters like Sweeney, Luther’s girlfriend and Mrs. Thomas, Luther’s manager who also play an important role in the story. Darwin when comes to Luther’s place has to go through many ups and downs. Though he is well-to-do, he faces many challenges both monetarily and mentally. Eventually, the story continues to Darwin’s adulthood. By then, his core values are strengthened and many new people enter his life. So it is interesting to know what happens in his journey. Will Luther have any significant impact on Darwin’s life? To know more, you will have to read this book.

The title “Guardian of Deceit” fits well with this story. The book is divided into three parts which makes it convenient to follow the story. The book is neither fast nor slow, it is well-paced. Mr. Coles has done a wonderful job of developing the characters. They are all unique and practical. Many can relate themselves to these characters at some point or the other. I admire the writing style of the author. It is simple and well-articulated.

The most captivating thing for me was the development of all these characters. They were very realistic and vivid that depicts the author’s creativity. I especially appreciate the character of Darwin. He is mature, sensible, and mentally strong, unlike most teenagers. His attitude remains similar even after he grows up. Dr. Adrain’s relationship with Darwin is quite appealing. The way he helps him is noteworthy. Darwin’s attitude of beating the odds is appreciable. The book spans for nearly 15 to 18 years but still the story is not rushed or dragged in any way. The growth and development of the characters in that period are quite good. The biggest appeal for me is to see how Darwin overcomes the problem and his determination of being the best. The author has illustrated well about the complex relationships that humans have. It helps the reader connect to the story better.

Though I enjoyed reading the book, I feel it lacks the spark that is crucial in stories like this one. I was slightly drifted off in between, despite the story being interesting. But these are the minor issues that I faced and need not be the same to others who read this novel.

Guardian of Deceit is a well-written book that is suitable to a wide range of readers. I did not find any errors. So I can say that the book is professionally edited. It also does not contain any obscenity. There is nothing major that I disliked about this book.

So with that being said, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this to anybody who likes reading books with unique and interesting characters which also contain a meaningful message. This may not appeal to people preferring fast-paced novels.
