Review by onepiece2 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
On the night of his trip to see his grandfather’s grave, Tom Olsen never expected to find an orphaned girl named Sarah at his door. He was even more surprised to learn that this 13-year-old girl was his granddaughter. Full of spunk and a defiant attitude, Sarah didn’t want to spend her summer in the middle of nowhere with a man she barely knew. However, when she finds herself on an adventurous hike with Tom and his Native American friends, she discovers that her connection to her grandfather may be deeper than she thought. With her newfound family and a dauntless spirit, Sarah uncovers the truth about her heritage and the history that lies in the sacred land around her.
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an informative and captivating read. With stories about the first people and how they lived in the land before us, readers are sure to think about the people of the past and how they have impacted the world we live in today. I appreciated how the author integrated legends and spirituality with the Olympic National Park found in Washington State. I knew little about this place when I started reading, so following the character’s journey through the wild encouraged me to learn more about it.
I enjoyed how much the characters, Tom and Sarah, developed throughout the story. As they travel together and face different challenges, they get to learn more about each other and their connection to the sacred land around their family’s grave. With the help of Tom’s friends, they are able to realize that they can help each other to protect the place that means the most to them. One part of the story that I disliked was the excessive use of profanity throughout the story. I found it to be a little annoying and unnecessary to the story.
This story is told from a third person point of view and follows different characters throughout their adventure. The way the author switched between different characters was very smooth and easy to follow. At the beginning of the book, there are detailed maps that show where the character’s journey takes place. This helped me to visualize the layout of the national park and the location of other places mentioned throughout the book.
I rate Strong Heart 4 out of 4 stars . The characters were well developed while the story kept me intrigued and left me wanting to read more. There were little grammatical errors, so this book was well edited and written well. However, this book does contain some content and language that is inappropriate for young readers. So, I would recommend this book to teenagers, young adults, and older readers who enjoy adventurous stories and historical fiction.
