Review by Githadun -- The Spirit of Want
The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is an amazing novel. A. J. MacMiel holds a party and invites donors who had contributed in making the new Eye Institute possible. Luke Osbourne is also in attendance. Since Luke is not a donor, he tries to appear confident and justified in attending the party. He doesn’t know why A. J. had invited him. After a while, Luke meets A. J.’s daughters: Lucy and Elizabeth. Lucy works as a lawyer and Elizabeth is a teacher. Elizabeth chose to be a teacher because she likes children. When the party is over, Luke is shocked to find that the tires, wheels, bumpers, radio, and mirrors of his car are missing. Lucy offers to give him a ride back to his place. Lucy is drunk but insists that she can drive. Unfortunately, she drives at a high speed and results into causing an accident. She is later charged with vehicular manslaughter and Luke becomes the key witness.
The author conducted extensive research on legal matters, the field of medicine, and religion. The reader is taken through legal proceedings and deliberations. This exhibits a clear picture of what happens in courts. Various medical problems and their treatment are also discussed. This might be useful to those working in the field of medicine. I liked how everything was vividly described. Although I’m not conversant with the medical field, I could understand various medical issues and how they are handled.
The author also incorporated suspense in this book. It was not easy for me to predict how events would unfold. I found myself speculating up to the last page. This made the book more enjoyable. The characters were also well-developed and interesting.
I did not like the way Lucy abandoned her husband and child. She wronged both her husband and daughter. I was very disappointed in her when she fell in love with a client. She should have just performed her work as a professional and then go back to her family. From Lucy’s story, I learnt that every decision has its consequences. Lucy’s awful decision destroyed her reputation, career, and the wonderful relationship she had with her family. She became a failure in both marriage and motherhood. I also disliked the fact that Luke had a minor role to play in the story. His absence was much felt.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was professionally edited and interesting. The reason I didn’t give it 3 stars is because the errors I found were just minor. I would like to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys novels full of mystery and suspense.
