Hiram McDowell works as a renowned surgeon, travels frequently, and climbs some of the tallest mountains in the world. However, he is far from perfect. His family life is complicated- he has many kids that he sees infrequently and a wife which he does not care for. He is quick to anger and disgust. Many discrepancies begin to pop up within his professional life and career. Near the start of this book he is simply not a relatable or likable character.

McDowell written by William H. Coles is somewhat of a coming of age story for Hiram McDowell. He is an adult when the story begins, yet he grows throughout the book. He experiences multiple life changing events, which shape him into a different person by the end. This character development is what I found most enjoyable about this book. Throughout the book I grew with McDowell and learned to empathize with the character I once despised.

William H. Coles does a fantastic job of depicting all the characters within this book as human. They all make mistakes. They all grow from their mistakes. They do horrible things one minute, and the next they are trying to resolve their past ways. No character within this book is demonized, or portrayed as an angel. They are all human- with flaws, emotions, and the potential to grow.

The writing style within this book is captivating, and kept me engaged most of the time throughout the book. There were times however, where a passage of text would bore me, but this happened infrequently. As long as I kept reading, I was quickly drawn once again into the actions of the developing characters.

This book was easy to read, as I was not distracted by typos or errors within the text. It deserves a perfect rating, and no less. Because of its exceptional editing and the detail within character development, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to anyone sixteen and older, with a couple of exceptions. It does contain quite a lot of profanity, which should be take into consideration before read. In addition, moderately detailed erotic scenes do occur a couple of times throughout this book. If a reader would find either of these items offensive or repulsive, I would recommend them to abstain from reading this book. To anyone who do not view these items as a dealbreaker, happy reading!
