Veil of Secrecy by Margaret Franceschini is a beautiful novel that will touch your heart. It’s a story about loss and grief, with many twists and turns. Prepare for the heart-wrenching story you will not be able to put down.

Sixteen year old Julie have a big dreams and plans for her future. She is dreaming of becoming a famous journalist and to escape living in a small fisherman village. She spends her time day-dreaming and writing. Her ambitions got interrupted when she discovers she is pregnant with her married boss, the owner of the bakery she is working at. Rejected by her lover, she turns to her parents who decide to take her to a convent in Nova Scotia, where she delivers a baby-girl and puts her for an adoption. The storyline flash forward sixteen years, to Julie’s daughter Marina. Marina is living in a big city and have same dreams like her birth mother Julie, to write and become a journalist. Unaware of her adoption history, she faces the same situation like her birth mother. Marina got pregnant and abandoned by her older lover. Marina delivers a baby at the same place she was welcomed to the world sixteen years ago.

The story is well-written and make you feel deep emotions for each of the characters. Mother and daughter both go through relatable traumas when giving up their children. They physically look alike, with a red hair and piercing blue eyes. They both have passion for writing. They are both deceived in love. They make the same, tragic mistake falling in love with a wrong man.

Veil of Secrecy will be a challenging read for people who have lost their child. I wouldn’t recommend it, because it may trigger painful memories, as this book have a surprise ending. Also, people who are sensitive about the adoption, or may gave their child for adoption would find this book very emotionally challenging.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I wasn’t able to put it down all the way to the end. I was deeply involved in the story and intrigued by its secrets. Love the way the writer flash out the characters. The book is well edited, no errors were found. The book does not contain any profanity. Romantic scenes in the book are tasteful and not explicit at all.
