The Book starts from Doctor Herman Beaman’s point of view as he reads from the Burks family journals, the story then follows the journals detailing the lives of the Burks family starting with the arrival of Silas Burks and his family, where they make a life as cattle farmers in an area called No man’s land, through all there trials and tribulations, life’s and deaths, and revenge plots against those that have done them wrong. The book then follows the life of Selmar Burks, Silas’s youngest son, through all his hardships and his one goal of revenge against a prominent family who have caused him great heartache. Selmer later on at the young age of nineteen becomes the Sundowner county Sheriff to ensure he can legally extract his revenge on those responsible.
I found this to be a good book. There is packed full of action, romance, crime, suspense, heart ache and revenge in the well written pages of this book that are sure to keep you interested.
The author has a good writing style and manages to keep the readers entertained with the story line right to the last page. The author created the perfect characters for the book with strong personalities and just as strong emotions, which helps the reader live into the book and with a determination to see that the Burks receive their revenge. The thirst for revenge and blood lust at time was bit chilling, but very understandable in the context of the story. I also enjoyed the fact that this is one of those books that give you the story from the different characters point of view no matter how big or small their role may be in the book, so you get a chance to experience it from different walks of life.
I enjoyed this book and was enthralled by the great story line and well thought out characters. The book at times left me happy for the characters, but it also bought a lot of sadness with all the pain the characters had to endure. I look forward to reading the second book in the series and wait in anticipation for it to be released, as I am sure it will be another great read.
I would recommend this book to all as a good and action packed read, one not to be missed out on. I would rate it a 3 out of 4.
