[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Paradise Rot" by Larry Weiner.]

In "Paradise Rot", by Larry Weiner, we first meet Kyle Brightman, who, at 31 years of age is lounging in a psychiatric facility watching re-runs of his favorite television series. Applying for a once in a life time opportunity as an art director on an island paradise, life is finally beginning to look up for Kyle. When Kyle meets his boss, a rather slimy, Zombie business man, and his power-hungry and treacherous assistants, along with other employees of the island, he begins to realize that this wonderful opportunity may have a darker side. Kyle's job is to entice the middle-class to vacation at a newly built resort on St. Agrippina, a remote island in the British West Indies.

The supporting cast of characters include: a Cajun man who owns a tavern deep in the jungle, a G.I. Jane with a talking dog, retired air force pilots, a college graduate with a convincing Jamaican accent and a poor choice in wardrobe, a military genius who was also lately released from a psychiatric ward, and also the possible love of Kyle's life. The main character Kyle is smart-mouthed, brave, but with an unfortunate habit of getting conked in the head, and of being distracted by beautiful women. The relationships and conflict between Kyle and these characters results in a hilarious effort to save the lives of unsuspecting tourists from ending up on the dinner menu at the resort.

The writing in this novel is modern, and well done. The dialogue is rich and witty. The description of the island itself lures the reader to thoughts of sand, beaches, palm trees and cold beverages with little umbrellas in them. The plot is fast-paced, interesting and a fresh and unique look at the zombie sub-genre. The characters are personable and thoroughly enjoyable. Although I found a couple of typographical errors, they did not detract in any way from the story. There are some necessarily graphic and bloody scenes which only enhance the story-line.

I recommend this book to fans of the paranormal. I laughed often throughout reading this story, and completely enjoyed the unusual and atypical zombies. The concepts in this book were intriguing and very different from the usual apocalyptic stories of the re-animated. A fun and rollicking read, with crisp characters and zany dialogue, it leaves the reader with the question, "What if...?"

I'm very interested in reading the up-coming Part Two of "Paradise Rot," and seeing where the author takes his odd bunch of characters next!

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
