Review by meenia -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
“This is the Olympic Peninsula. This is a land of magic, history, and legend. A place of myth, ancient stories, ancient people.” This quotation from the book Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is the perfect sentence to describe this book.
Tom, William (also known as Walleye or ‘Eye), and Myra (William’s daughter) are the main characters in this book. The story begins while they are getting ready for a backpacking trek into Olympic National Park to visit the burial site of Bob-Bob, Tom’s grandfather. In addition to securing his grandfather’s grave, Tom needed to return an artifact to the land that he had removed the day his grandfather died. The artifact was an atlatyl, a spear thrower. Tom was anxious to get there before Buckhorn, a mining company, does irreparable damage. The company is planning to extract erbium, a mineral which will remove toxins from coal.
As they are preparing for their journey, Tom’s ex-wife, Ruth, arrives with their pre-teen granddaughter, Sarah. Until that moment, Tom was unaware that he had a granddaughter since he had been estranged from his wife and daughter, Becky, now deceased. Sarah is a spirited, troubled child with a challenging attitude and Ruth is refusing to share her home with her.
Unable to reschedule the trip, William suggests they bring Sarah with them. This will be a life-changing experience for the child.
Prepare yourself for a wild ride. This book takes you into another life, another time and a set of experiences that will leave you questioning reality. It’s a fantasy story of powerful growth as Sarah earns the name “Strong Heart”.
Charlie Sheldon’s experience hiking in Olympic National Park made it easy to visualize hiking the terrain. I felt part of the group of friends as they started their journey, but wasn’t prepared for the unexpected setting change.
What I liked most about the book was the way the author immediately drew me into the lives of the main character. I liked them instantly and, as a result, I thought I knew where the story was headed, but was in for quite a surprise. Strong Heart is an unusual, action packed journey of intense fantasy - or is it? When Sarah disappears for 8 days, the experience she describes provides insight into one of the many legends surrounding the origins of North American tribes. This book attempts to describe some of the theories with the introduction of scientific data as well as mystical stories.
I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well edited and I would highly recommend it to adventure enthusiasts and those with a curiosity for scientific theories. There are some graphic scenes so I wouldn’t recommend it to young viewers. Just don’t leave your imagination behind.
