I read Guardian of Deceit by William H. Coles. This book is about a wealthy high school boy who aspires to become a doctor. He has high hopes for his future until his parents pass away and his aunt who was caring for him is put up in a nursing home. Darwin is then sent to live with his celebrity football star cousin, Luther who treats him very differently, not allowing him his allowance from his trust unless he does work for Luther. Darwin accepts this and quickly adapts to his new way of life; learning new skills that the other staff teaches him. He goes through life meeting a lot of different types of people, some that aren’t very nice to him, but he never changes who he is or what he believes in. Darwin is an admirable character.

I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. Guardian of Deceit is extremely well written. I liked how the characters were introduced and how they interacted with each other. I didn’t find many instances of typos throughout the book and it appeared to be professionally edited.

The part I liked most about the book was the introduction of Granny. It was very descriptive and funny. The way she was introduced really told the reader what kind of person she was and I thought she was the best character. The part I disliked the most about the book was Luther always getting away with terrible things he was doing to women. I also would have liked to see a strong female character that didn’t give into him. There was really only one strong female character throughout the book, Dominique and she is not introduced until much later.

This is a great book for young adults that like a book that has suspense, drama, and a bit of a mystery. There are curse words throughout the book that readers could have a problem with if they have issues with swearing,

I would highly recommend this book. I found it very entertaining to read and I felt like I knew the characters. The descriptions and characteristics of all of the characters were well thought out and made sense. When a character did something there was never a moment that I thought “there was no way that character would do that.” They were relatable to real people you might encounter in the world. Great book!
