The Black Rainbow by Daniel Ekine

Book Description

The Black Rainbow by Daniel Ekine is a childrens book that deals with the Rainbows in the mystical Rainbow people who live in Rainbow Land. Their life is predictable until the priestess rainbow tells them of an upcoming change. The king and queen rainbow decide that it is best to keep this from their subjects until they need to know. When the changes do arrive they are met with fear and ignorance. This book is about how people don't tolerate things they don't understand and how that can effect people's way of thinking.

Personal Opinion and Rating

I give this a rating of three stars out of four. There are a lot of formatting errors that are annoying. The spelling was good. The lines were short and choppy. Definitely a good story for the beginner readers out there. I liked the moral of the story. All in all a pretty good story for younger generation.

I didn't give this a higher rating as the formatting errors were impossible to ignore. I only found one sentence that had multiple ands in it and that was a blessing. Most writers who ignore that guideline, usually do it a lot more than once. The most repetitive format error was lack of spaces after periods, commas, parenthesis ( . , “ ). When I say they are repetitive I mean they are on every page and multiple times. The chapter beginnings are irritating with the fact you need to find the first letter of the first word in the chapter. I don't know what happened but the first letter ended up completely separate of the rest of the word. This is one that actually makes it difficult to read as the reader should never have to search for the letters for the words in front of them. The last complaint I have about the formatting of this book is the images. There are titles with the images except they are not really well placed. If the sentence or phrase was formatted directly under the images then it would be more clear than half beside and half under or on the next page or wherever it ended up. Some images may need to have their size reduced a little bit to accommodate the text. Sadly there are quite a few formatting errors and that is why this story lost a star in its rating.

I found the lines very choppy. It is a very basically written story and that is alright for children. I am happy that the sales page says it is for children as that is obvious when you read it. Which is okay when you are writing for children as they don't understand complex sentence structure, it just confuses them.

I like the moral of the story. It is strongly expressed throughout the story, first the problem and then the solution. It is straight forward and to the point. It does not hint at the moral but spells it out for you in a direct manner. It works well for children as they don't understand subtext at their reading or comprehension level.

Overall I found the story works well for children and would be excellent with formatting changes. Just because they are young, does not mean they won't get confused by the lack of spaces. Overall I liked the story as I've read many stories to my young daughters and this is an improvement over some of them.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
