This book won the Newberry Award for a good reason. After Buddy's mother died, he was sent to an orphanage in deplorable condition. He ran away from the orphanage and began a journey where he met kind people and abusive people and finally finds his grandfather who plays in a band. It hit on historical facts from segregation and combined fun into a story that any grammar school age kid would like. You really feel what Buddy is feeling throughout the story. I would recommend it to anyone over 8 or 9 years old.

Finished reading a few days ago and thought it was a cute book! Quick read and a great story!
