Review by Florence Nalianya -- Guardian of Deceit
Everyone finds it special to have a family or to be part of one. Death is cruel. When it strikes, it takes away the most dependent upon members of the family. The reality is that the once-happy family is shattered and exposed to nondescript suffering. It's a story that can only be told by those who have walked this path. Guardian of Deceit by William H. Coles is a tale of a family separated by death.
This book is a tale of Darwin, a teenager who is orphaned at an early age. After the death of his parents, Darwin is left with his aunt. As death was not enough misfortune, sickness befalls Darwin's aunt and she is unable to take care of him. He is sent to live with his uncle. Luther is a well known and established footballer with character issues. Luther finds Darwin as baggage and treats him with much contempt. People have different characters. Sweeney, who is Luther's neglected wife seems to relate well with Darwin. Darwin is taken in and much appreciated by the household and Granny instead of an uncle he thought will help him out. During his stay at Luther's place, Darwin is exposed to bad habits like gambling, violence, and adultery. Despite all these, he is not carried away like any other teenager would do. He maintains his path of integrity and pursues his dream of becoming a doctor. Every time we find ourselves in difficult situations God sends us a helper. While traveling to his uncles' place in a plane, Darwin meets Dr. Malvern who becomes his guardian angel. Dr. Malvern and his family become Darwins' mentors and impact his life in various ways.
Darwin grows into a man facing extreme horrifying situations. He faces these hurdles even though he was born to a wealthy family. He lives the life that is below the basic standard. He feels alone as he can't bring his conscience to trust anyone around him. He is exposed to the worst examples in terms of love and relationships. These situations haunt him to a great extent in his life.
This book has brought tears to my eyes. The author captured concepts of love, family, and relationships in a very unique fashion. I was able to perfectly relate to the painful situations experienced by Darwin. They sounded very realistic. A family gives one a beautiful sense of belonging. It's second after God. Nevertheless, there is no permanent situation.life can be cruel, people face painful experiences but with great determination, its possible to conquer and make a dream valid. Similarly, not every person in this world is cruel, good people still exist.
I liked reading this book so much. Its a book with immense life lessons to learn. It features real concepts of life. It was difficult to find anything to dislike in this book. I found no grammatical errors and so the book was perfectly edited. I proudly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book is for every class of readers especially teenagers. Death doesn't choose where to go and so everyone could be exposed to a situation similar to that of Darwin. It's a book that will help readers connect and deal with all characters in the path of life.
