The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis

Just finished reading 'The Twelve Tribes of Hattie' by Ayana Mathis. I found this book very difficult to finish and wanted to stop many times but continued on determined to see if it got better; it didn't. This book tells the story of Hattie and her 11 children starting in 1923 and moving backwards and forwards in time spanning sixty years. The lives of her children are captured in twelve distinct threads. I did not find the stories linked together in a way that left you feeling fulfilled in your knowledge of each child. Each thread only gave you a glance into the lives of the child and I went forward not knowing what happened to them or how they were connected as a family at the end.
Just wanted to hear some other thoughts on this novel.
