McDowell by William H. Coles is about a man named Hiram McDowell who is a distinguished surgeon, a mountain climber, and a marathon runner. He is a successful man who has everything anyone could want. It is a shame he has to be an arrogant, self-serving, pompous, cold-hearted man who cheats on his wife and betrays his friends. One of his friends vows to get even with him and see him pay for his mistakes. The only people he seems to care about and does not treat poorly are his children.

Disaster strikes his family when his grandson commits murder and attempted suicide. Hiram then loses everything when he is arrested and convicted for second-degree murder. His past misdeeds catch up to him. He loses everything when he gets a 25-year sentence in prison. However, he escapes and goes on the run for a while before meeting a family he thought was strange, but curious. Throughout the course of his trek, he learns a lot, mostly the hard way, and he begins to write his memoirs. Eventually, he collects himself and is transformed. It is through his hardships that he finds freedom.

In the beginning, I did not care for the main character, Hiram McDowell. Right off the bat, he left a man, his friend, for dead. Being a doctor, he should not put his own well-being above others. Nevertheless, he did.

I did not like the part when he cheated on his wife. I also did not like the part when she told him his son, Billie, got her daughter, Tasha, pregnant. He made it sound like it was all her problem and he did not want his son to take any responsibility at all.

There were many parts of the book that I liked, but the one that sticks out most was when he met Maud. I thought it was interesting how she knew if he was lying or not. Their friendship developed and she showed him kindness even though she knew he probably did not deserve it.

I would highly recommend this book. The plot is remarkable. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a good one, a page-turner. Anyone who enjoys fiction would most likely enjoy it. It has a little bit of every type of genre, from action, to romance, to comedy, to mystery. This makes it an interesting read.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not rate it a 3 because it had lots of action and was cleverly written. Also, I did not notice any spelling and grammatical errors, which indicates that it was probably professionally edited.
