If you are looking for an intriguing and a page-turning novel that will make you burn your midnight oil, Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is the book you should try out. It’s my second book by this author that I completed reading recently.

Lucy, a lawyer, meets Luke, a doctor at a party organized by her brother. As Luke leaves, he realizes that his vehicle is broken down. Lucy offers to drive him in her vehicle and because she is drunk, encounters an accident that leaves Luke with a cut in his leg. Lucy is charged with vehicular manslaughter of a woman who was found dead around the scene of the accident. It is surprising how the twist of events leads these two characters to have a feeling for each other. What is the fate of the case before Lucy? Will the two live together despite their difference in terms of ambitions and careers?

I enjoyed reading this book to the end. The list of aspects that engrossed me is endless. I was moved by the concise and flowing language that the author used throughout the novel. Right from the beginning, the language remains simple free from jargon and complexity. The author also engages the audience through the dialogues which appear to be real as one can get into the character’s point of view. Most of the dialogues contain an aspect of humor that kept me smiling when reading them. The author was able to arouse interest through the twist of events as the story progressed. In one chapter, Lucy is enjoying her honeymoon with Luke. In another one, she wants to abort and seems tired of her marriage. To make it interesting, Lucy changes her perspective of love and marriage as she is now focused on her career. She has decided to be married by her career therefore she takes up the case of Reverend Bain who was accused of defilement.

I liked the author’s choice of building strong female characters like Lucy. She has been depicted as an independent, resilient, and ambitious. I was inspired by her boldness when she got pregnant and the husband provokes her by wanting to know why she hadn't told him of the pregnancy. The novel captured various themes that were well brought out and resolved such as love, parenting, betrayal, racism, and ambition.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I was satisfied with the way the author resolved to end the story. All my expectations and questions were answered something I look for in romance novels. The book was also professionally edited. I recommend this novel to lovers of drama and romance. It is an amazing book that one cannot put down!

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

A romance novel with a resilient, independent and ambitious woman is quite a recommendation. The fact that the reviewer points out the unfolding of the events, the good and the bad makes it seem more realistic in the current world. It's definitely a must read.
