[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Magnificent Mind-Set Man" by Russell D Hamblin.]
The Magnificent Mind-Set Man: The Seven Transcending Mind-Sets of Success was authored by Russell D. Hamblin. The book is approximately 158 pages long. This is a work of fiction, but the concepts discussed and the lessons that can be drawn are practical and essential in life. The author’s own experiences informed the writing of the book. Consequently, anyone looking forward to leading an extraordinary life will benefit immensely from the book.
Roger Hunt, an environmental geologist, is on his way to Boise, Idaho, on a wintry Tuesday afternoon. Thoughts of the past begin flooding his mind as he is driving. He realizes he had fallen into his old stress-related habits of overscheduling and under-planning. In fact, he had overlooked refueling his car and was almost running out of gas in a remote place. He is confronted with two tough choices; either to hitchhike to the nearest town to purchase gasoline or drive in search of a ranch with gas tanks. As he had not seen any vehicles on that route, Roger decides to try his luck by following a dirty track branching from the main road.
This is how we are introduced to the leading character in the book. Like many people, Roger Hunt is pursuing his career passionately. However, he has often neglected his family and has been a gambling addict as well. Billy Haynes had appeared to Roger many years ago to teach him superordinate qualities and traits that would transform his view of success. He had been advised to write them down, apply them to his life, and thereafter share them with others.
These qualities touch on all spheres of life. What makes this a unique book is the reader is called to honestly perform a mindset evaluation and then follow with appropriate mindset adjustment. This adjustment enables one to develop constructive habits to replace destructive ones and also establish more effective thought patterns. Therefore, it is not merely about success based on another person’s understanding, but what one has defined and set in place necessary mechanisms to achieve and sustain it.
The book places more significant emphasis on the development of divine characteristics. These seven characteristics are virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, kindness, godliness, and charity. The author provided excellent biblical references to illustrate these qualities. He does not go in pursuit of proselytizing anyone, though. He proved how one finds fulfillment in life when they are turned-out, selfless, by dwelling on these seven superior qualities. Sufficient examples were provided as well of people who endured debilitating challenges but still opted to support others instead of wallowing in self-pity.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. What I liked most about is that real-life challenges were described, and practical steps to go beyond average were provided. Ultimately, one also arrives at a fork-in-the-road and has to act on what they have read or resume walking down the path of luck. Editing was professionally done, and the language used was straightforward. I heartily rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend the book to all ardent readers of self-help books. Readers should be aware there are references to the Bible in the book, and hence anyone averse to this should steer clear of it.
