Official Review: The Day Jesus Rode Into Croydon

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Day Jesus Rode Into Croydon" by Kirk St Moritz.]
When I first read the title of the book I was expecting something about a born again Christian and how that changed his life, but it wasn’t like that at all.
The story focuses around a man named Joseph who is struggling to make ends meet. At the beginning of the book Joe is looking for somewhere to live and ends up in a less than perfect house with a less than perfect Danny. The story follows the events of the first couple months after the move in, particularly on Joe believing he has been chosen by God to fight evil. This is huge for Joe because he has never seen himself as being religious and is the least likely person to be chosen by God for a mission to get rid of evil. The story alternates for the most part between present day and flashbacks to times in childhood which explains the events that are happening to Joe in the present. This leads to the ending which will definitely leave readers in shock!
Due to my initial thoughts from the books title I didn’t begin reading it with any expectations; however after a chapter or two I was completely hooked! The storyline was appealing and even with the alternates between past and present, the book flowed well. The alternates were vital for the storyline and I enjoyed reading why the present events were happening.
The story is mainly told from Joe’s point of view, at times he is talking directly to the reader which I found a bit annoying but it was mostly written in present tense. There are parts of the story where it is told from someone else’s point of view which is good for development of the characters leading to the reader either loving or hating them!
Kirk St Moritz has written with so much detail (somewhat tedious at times) that is was very easy to capture the scene. However some may find the language in the book not to their taste due to the extreme usage of profanities, but these are used to enhance the portrayal of the characters. Drug use is also frequent in the book.
Though I was confused at times I loved the storyline and the characters. I was laughing one minute and completely shocked the next, mainly due to the ending. I give this book 3½ out of 4 stars. I plan on re-reading it in the near future and would definitely recommend it! Every excellent book for a first novel!
