Strong Heart{/i] is a fictional story that takes place in the Olympic Peninsula Wilderness of Washington State. Tom Olsen didn't know he had a granddaughter until this 13 year old headstrong girl, Sarah, showed up at his door. His ex-wife, Ruth, dropped her off for Tom to care for her throughout the summer. He had planned a trip with his friend William (Walleye, called 'Eye), and Myra, William's daughter, on a backpacking journey through the wilderness. Tom was looking forward to this adventure to visit the grave of his grandfather, Bob-Bob. Tom had no intention of taking Sarah along, but she had nowhere else to go. Sarah thought Tom lived at the ends of the earth and certainly did not want to go on this adventure, but she had no other choice.

Sarah took along her sketchpad, which became a huge piece of evidence in putting together scientific facts and history. Tom did not know of Sarah's artistic abilities until she shared her drawings from the sketchpad she brought along. The ancient artifact Tom had associated with his grandfather becomes a key element to the history in relation to the story.
Sarah disappears from the group for several days and returns with a completely different outlook on family history and survival. This brings mystery into the storyline that she shares with her drawings. This book is about having faith with Sarah missing for 8 days, alone, in the cold, the rain, the forest. Sarah definitely has a strong heart. Will her grandfather believe her tale?

Did Sarah see the short-face bear? Did the bear show them the Marking Place, the people's sacred place or was this a vision or Native American myth Sarah is sharing? Did the fall she sustained while being away from the group for several days cause these visions? Could a spear thrower carried by the first people who ever visited the western hemisphere play a part in Sarah's drawings?

The mystery in this story thickens when they return to retrieve the missing artifact. As they continue their travels, they cross paths with the Buckhorn Company's surveyors. The Buckhorn Company wanted the minerals from the land for their labs. Would this become the most dangerous journey Tom and his friends have ever taken?

Will Tom's Russian friend, Sergei, the scientist, who returned on the journey with them, be able to assist them with their claim or will it be more of confusing belief with fact? "Oral traditions, legends, and memory are as useful for understanding the past as fossilized pieces of bone."

The rural community and Native American characters bring history, along with magic, to the storyline. I was so intrigued by the timeline, which was actually taking place in current times and also involving a story that took place centuries ago.

Charlie Sheldon, the author, is such a great storyteller that he brings adventure, fiction, history, and mystery to the reader in this book. He shares his tale about the Olympic mountains, the Pacific coast, and human origins in a captivating way. His time at sea certainly shines through in his story telling. I recommend this book to anyone who is adventurous, loves the outdoors, and loves a good mystery related to scientific facts, and history. This book is for anyone who has their own ideas about human travel and archeological evidence of ancient seafaring. The human adventure of this book alone is captivating to the reader. A good storyteller should pass culture generation to generation. This author does just that.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was so captivating, magical, historical and simply a very good read. Even though I knew from the start it was fiction, I started to believe it was true. I found no faults in the story. This book has no profanity or explicit language. I did not find any typos or grammar errors and believe it was professionally edited. I am so glad I read this book. It makes me look back at my ancestors and retrace footsteps in history.
