Review by Aurelia_2020 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Imagine this; you are in the middle of the forest when you fall down a cliff during a hiking exercise with strangers who you met just a few hours before the escapade. While there, you go back in time to relive the lives of your ancestors whom you have no idea of and actually enjoy a journey where you have been taken captive to be a wife to another stranger. This is Sarah, Tom’s granddaughter.
She is dragged to Tom’s house by his ex-wife, her grandmother Ruth and her husband Fletcher Lynch. Tom and his friends are about to leave for camp in the Olympic National Park where his grandfather Bob-Bob is buried. His friends William and Myra convince him that it is okay taking Sarah with him. They have one aim, to return an archaeological spear known as the atlatl that Tom took away from Bob-Bob when he buried him on the camping site years back.
Things get interesting as Fletcher Lynch with a team from Buckhorn International begin the process of surveying for their mining operations that are considered illegal by the native community where William and his daughter Myra belong. Fletcher is very influential and hates Tom with a passion. Fletcher’s father and Bob-Bob have a history in opposing each other in preservation of the park.
When Sarah gets lost in the park, Tom and his friends have no choice but to involve Buckhorn International that sends them a search crew. The crew gives up after the fourth day and leaves the old man and his friend looking for Sarah’s body. Sarah resurfaces after eight days with the story about reliving her ancestors’ lives that no one believes. They suspect that she might have had a dream but her story details suggest otherwise. You will be surprised by what happens on their second trek.
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an exciting read; I did not want to put the book down. The author has an exceptional way of creating events that are full of suspense such that I crossed my fingers and my heart pumped as I read the story. The book ignited some curiosity about evolution in me.
I liked the author’s writing style of mixing both first and third persons. Third person made me relate to the author and felt like I was also telling the story while using first person made me relate more to the characters. The author exceptionally integrated these two persons to strengthen the story. I also liked the author’s choice of names of characters; they were humorous and made the characters unforgettable. They also accentuate the author’s style of writing where he integrates present and past events seamlessly. The author’s use of dialogue also gives the book an edge as it feels more realistic and relatable. There is nothing I disliked about this book.
The book seems to be professionally edited as I did not come across errors. There are few instances where the author uses some vulgar words that were borderline to me hence inappropriate for children and young readers. I would recommend it to anyone who loves drama, exploration, nature, archaeology or epic events. Do not worry if you do not fall under these categories as the author’s descriptive style allows you to follow the story and the suspense traps you there until you finish reading. I think the book will appeal most to explorers. I definitely rate this book four out of four stars as it is excellently edited and well written.
