How will you react if your cat or dog started talking like a human being out of the blue? Will you run off screaming or cherish the moment? Here's a story of the day an animal spoke.
The Day Max Spoke by Dr. Dennis Mungall is a novel that details the story of Max, a Feral cat. Max is hale and hearty until he suddenly falls sick. He finds it difficult to breathe, and Paul, his owner, takes him to see the veterinarian. The tests show that Max has fluid surrounding his lungs and abdomen. He's diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis, and he has little time to live. Max and Paul go back home, and Max lays on his deathbed. Eyes glowing and a smile on his face, he says, "Dad, I have to tell you my story..." What exactly is Max? Is he really an animal? What does he have to say? How does Paul react?
When I read the description of this novel, I was expecting a fun animal kingdom story that adults and children can enjoy. Imagine my shock when a supposed animal story turned out to be something entirely different. I felt a cocktail of emotions after the introduction. I truly felt played. However, I kept an open mind, and halfway into the book, I started enjoying it.
The book is a fusion of the Christian faith and history. The story itself was inspired by the author's cat, a companion for fifteen years who passed on. The author honors his cat through this book. Little wonder Max lived way before the death of Jesus Christ and beyond 2020. What a miracle! Max went to the cross with Jesus Christ, preached the gospel with St. Paul, and even joined on the trip to discover America. That's some premium adventure!
I loved that Max was the narrator, who took us from present to past, and back to present. Readers will travel from Egypt to Jerusalem, Rome to Malta, Spain to Puerto Rico, Haiti, The Bahamas, and then Florida, in 93 pages! I loved the simple grammar and writing style used by the author in this book. I loved that an animal was the star of the show, propagating God's word and teaching us history. I loved the effortless infusion of verifiable facts in this animal tale. The author did his homework. I feel like this is an attractive way to teach little Christian children about Jesus Christ, spreading God's word, perseverance, and history. I also loved the gradual addition of key characters as the book progressed. This made it easier to keep up with Max's tale. I loved Max's relationship with St. Paul, Jesus Christ, and DaisyGirl.
Unfortunately, I disliked that there was a bit of inconsistency with Max's identity. I also find it very hard to accept that this storyline will fly with adults. It's more suitable for children. I encountered many errors that hampered my reading flow, making me backtrack a lot of times. The book wasn't professionally edited, but it contained no profanity or erotic scenes. For the reasons I've stated, I rate The Day Max Spoke by Dr. Dennis Mungall two out of four stars.
I recommend this book to Christian children between the ages of four and ten. Lovers of biblical and American history will also enjoy this book. However, non-Christians may not like this book.

Move countries? That serious? Lord! There's a talking cat, but it was just a prop. The real story has nothing to do with animal kingdoms. More like a christian and history novel.
