Review by MrsTurner2013 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
A plan to go camping to the Olympic National Park in Washington is thrown out the window when Tom receives a knock on his door. His ex-wife stands in the doorway with a 13-year-old girl by her side. Tom has never seen this girl in his life, but she looks familiar. Sarah is his granddaughter, and it is Tom’s turn to take her off his ex-wife's hands. She pushes Sarah into the house and leaves. Myra and William, who were to accompany Tom on his camping trip, help to make Sarah feel at home. After much deliberation, the group decides to take Sarah with them so she can acclimate herself with the area. While on the trip, Sarah disappears only to reappear again eight days later with a gash on her head, her palms sliced open, and the top half of a finger missing. The story that follows is an adventure of a lifetime!
Strong Heart: Strong Heart Series Book 1 by Charlie Sheldon is a beautiful fiction written with the love and care of someone who is familiar with the area and the surrounding cultures. The details expressed throughout the book exposes the research Sheldon has done of the area and his connection to the people as he has hiked Olympic National Park many times. He supplies maps at the beginning of the book to help his readers know where the characters are located. The Native American theme that runs through its pages paints a deep respect for the culture, the purpose, and design of legends and stories in the Native American community.
The rating of this novel is 4 out of 4. It is exceptionally written with a plot line that is captivating and informative. It is a fiction that is set in a realistic place addressing issues of the Native American community of the area. A fiction used as a platform to address problems that society is blind to or refuses to see is worth the highest of praises in the eyes of this reviewer.
The most liked aspect of this adventure is the clear respect of the Native American culture through the expression and importance of legends and stories. It highlights the historical relevance and archaeological significance of the information passed through such avenues. The depiction of such legends within this fiction brings to the attention of its audience a feature that tends to slip through the cracks of society. The aspect disliked most is the lack of character development and character history. The minimal amount of character history was given to keep the plot moving and this reviewer wanted the ability to connect with the characters more intimately. This does not take away from the story or the impact on this reviewer’s opinion of the masterpiece.
The audience who would appreciate this story covers much ground. Readers who are intrigued by cultural backgrounds, archaeological research and artifacts, disappearances, and adventure, would be engulfed in this classic. This reviewer urges readers who fit the above description to take the time to dive into the alluring experience that is Strong Heart.
