We Drank Wine: And Other Short Stories by Marion Reidel is a collection of linked comical short stories. The book introduces us to four women who are wives, parents, and best friends. Through all the trials and tribulations they face, they remain in each other’s corner.

I chose this book mainly because of its catchy title. As I scanned through the table of contents, I realized I would only get to read the “We Drank Wine” short story after getting through six stories first.

The story that saw my jaw drop to the floor was the one titled Mother-of-the-Bride. The title was fitting as the bride’s mother was the center of attention in her daughter’s bridal shower, much to her daughter’s dislike. From the moment that they allowed her to deliver her speech, she made it known how she had toiled and taken strain in the days leading up to the wedding. The best part of this short story came when the bride-to-be did the unthinkable. I will leave this juicy bit to the reader to read for themselves.

In another story titled Bedtime Stories, a nine-year-old girl named Taylor reminded me of my eight-year-old daughter. She continuously interrupted her dad when he was reading a book to her. Like my daughter, she is inquisitive and comments from the beginning of the story until its end.

The author’s writing style was impeccable, and the book was exceptionally edited as I did not come across any typographical or grammatical errors. The layout was simple, and the stories flowed delicately. All characters were fully developed and contributed positively to the specific storylines. The storylines were unique, believable, relatable, and captivating. The only thing that I disliked in the book were some characters, two characters to be specific. They were downright rude and disrespectful body shamers.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and will likely read it again when I need to unwind. I am delighted to award it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars and highly recommend it to readers who enjoy books that contain a bit of drama, comedy, and heaps of entertainment.

The book does not contain any sexual content. It is mainly for adult readers but also caters to children. One of the short stories, Bedtime Stories, is suitable for children of all ages. What I like about this book is that adult readers can share it with their young ones or read them some of the stories. Either way, they can kill two birds with one stone.

It looks like a useful book for bedtimes. I was enjoying your summary when you cut it short, Nqobile. Perhaps, it is a suspenseful book?

  I'm so sorry for cutting it short. There are stories with suspense-filled scenes but it's not all of them. Thanks for reading the review!
