The Bell Maker , by Chris Bowen is a well written, beautifully spun tale about a boy, his grandfather, and the choices we make in life that bring about a weave of intricate questions about faith, morality, and existence. This page turner will have you laughing one minute and crying the next as it guides you through a story filled with magic, love, and an inspiring ideal of truth and our purpose on this Earth.

The story is written in a way that makes you want to keep reading, page after page, you will not be able to put the book down. The word choices and literary devices are used exceptionally well and the humor present in the book allows you to laugh through, while still taking seriously, the important messages revealed in this text. The morals in this story are ten-fold, developing off of one another, and any reader will be able to find a connection to this book and at least one, if not many, of the morals it teaches. It is more than a narrative, more then just a fun story. It is a reminder to us all that there is beauty in silence and nature, and that the truly important things in life are the ones we overlook.

If you are looking for error, you might find it a bit difficult, at first, to transition from reading about the boy’s life to reading about the grandfather’s life, in the grandfather’s manuscripts. Do not let this deter you, however, for you will quickly be swept up into the grandfather’s tale as well, and it will all fit, like a completed puzzle, at the end. The book seems to be professionally edited, so the mild grammatical errors will go unnoticed if not looked for.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for many reasons. Aforementioned, the writing, word choices, and literary devices make this book a smooth, enjoyable read. I sat down for a long ride, only to realize that only two hours had passed when I finished the book and I wished it wasn't over yet. Another reason for the perfect rating was the emotion the book made me feel while reading - laughing one minute and crying the next. Laughing and crying were not the only emotions I felt. Inspiration, sadness, revelations, and awe also followed me along my reading journey. I believe this book will do that for others as well.

This book caters to young adults (middle school and up) and I could see many teachers wanting to present a story like this in their Language Arts classes, but it caters to older individuals as well. I am well into my adulthood and still found the morals and the social and political messages consumable. A reminder of what we should never forget and what we should keep fighting for in the real world and in our real lives.
