Review by Arma-Wolfomatiko -- The Spirit of Want
The Spirit Of Want is a work of fiction by William H. Coles.
The book depicts the story of a wealthy and egocentric family, who are only interested in money and their social status, except for one family member named Lucy which happens to be adopted. Thus it seems that the trait really runs through their blood.
It all starts at a party made by A.J. MacMiel, to raise money for a new Eye Institute. He invites Luke who is MD but does not have the social status of the MacMiel's.
Once at the party, he makes acquaintance with the two daughters of MacMiel and of course falls deeply in love with one of the daughters in a short period of time. Something he will deeply regret.
As a reader, you can fully relate to the ups and downs, the good, the bad and the ugly. Above all, you will go through series of events where certain choices are being made. These are choices we as people sometimes make without measuring the consequences.
The story also portrays how we can have it all but still want something we know is not good for us.
The book is easy to read and all the characters described by William H. Coles are very vivid. This made me immerse in the story so much, that at times I was left reading while gritting my teeth.
You get to know the characters inside out. It makes you fall in love with one, while wishing the worst for the other.
There is nothing negative I can say about The Spirit Of Want.
To my taste, it is well written, well balanced and immersive. I consider the book a page-turner and would not mind reading it all over again.
Definitely a good piece by William H. Coles.
Just to think about how the character Luke got to know the MacMiel daughters and how he, from that day chose the one who he wanted to spend his life with just because of her looks, instead of taking it slow and know her better and how this choice haunted him almost for the rest of his life is saddening.
The book teases you with eye-opening scenarios you can relate to, like being with someone who does not love you like you love them or maybe being in a relationship where the passion just is not there anymore.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. As I mentioned before, the book is immersive, the characters are vivid, and it is a good story with some powerful twists. You never know what is going to happen and as you progress through the book, you will come to love some of the characters and really hate the others.
I recommend this book to an 18+ audience because of mild depictions of nudity. Other than that, it is a good read for people looking for a good story that has some suspense, mystery and romance.
