Getting away from the bitter cold in Minnesota, Rachel and Nick Christenson retire to Crusty Beach, Oregon. Their new neighbors, Ruth and her husband, also moved from Minnesota. The two women become good friends. Single mom, Vivian, lives across the road from Rachel and is raising her son, Dusty. Rachel and Ruth are dependent upon the pensions of their husbands for survival. They find out that once their husbands die, they will receive $100 or less from their pension benefits. Vivian is dependent upon the child support she gets from her ex-husband. Dusty will soon turn 18, and Vivian will be destitute if she does not find a man to support her. Nick dies, and Rachel does not know how she will keep their home. Ruth tells her there are ways, but they are illegal. What is Ruth suggesting? Will Rachel go along with her? What would you do to survive? Will Vivian find a man? You will need to read A Few Trivial Felonies by Sandra Sperling to find out.

There were multiple things I liked about this book. Firstly, this book is full of humor. The reader will find themselves laughing at the audacity of Rachel and Ruth. Secondly, the author has developed the female characters into strong women who do not hesitate to do what they think needs done. Thirdly, the definition and justification of trivial felony is thought-provoking. Finally, the descriptions of the Oregon landscape are picturesque, and I felt like I was there.

The was one thing I disliked about this book, which was the portrayal and development of the male characters as weak, selfish, and uncaring men. My perception of the husbands was they did not care what their wives did as long as they were fed and could pursue their activities. The husbands’ visions of the future beyond their death did not include their wives.

I enjoyed this book immensely and had a hard time putting it down. I wanted to know what happened next in this well-written action-packed book. I believe the book has been edited by a professional as I only found three small errors in the entire book. These errors did not distract from my reading pleasure. I gladly give this book 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to older teenagers and adults who like humorous mysteries. The book content does include some borderline profanity that should not be offensive to most readers. The sexual content is descriptive but not exotic. This content would not be appropriate for young teenagers and may be offensive to some readers.
