“Fatal Decision” by John Greenwood is a fast paced story where the author provides the reader the thrill of a chase and the tingle of a mystery which keeps him on the edge of his seat. The cover of the book is simple and gives no indication of the type of story that the reader will encounter when he ventures to read it. The cover could have been made appealing and eye catching.

The characters are vividly sketched and are normal down to earth people who instantly connect with the reader. I was able to empathize with Sheldon and his wife and could feel their helplessness and hopelessness at the kidnapping of their only son. The police is also described in all their valor and I was impressed with the character of Detective Stanton who is diligent, brave and as good as a cop can be.

The plot is very expertly conceived and implemented. I could not decide on the “whodunit” and when the whole thing unraveled itself I was left in awe of the author’s planning and skill of execution. Although the plot is awesome, I still felt that it could have been made more hooking for the reader if John had left a few clues at appropriate junctures to keep the reader guessing and exercising his brain to figure out the mystery.

The scenes are crisp and the author is able to make the reader feel each and every emotion of the characters. I could feel the anticipation and the fear of Sheldon for his son’s safety when he goes to kill the intended man. I could feel his internal turmoil when he is told that he needs to kill a man to save his son. A common and a good man told to do something so against his conscience is beautifully portrayed in the book.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and give it a 3 out of 4. I have not given it a 4 because I feel that John can do better in terms of pulling the reader and engaging him in his story.
