Review by AliCat333 -- McDowell by William H. Coles
McDowell by William H. Coles is a roller coaster of events.
Hiram McDowell is anything but a friendly man, callus, crude, un-empathic, and someone who will walk over another to reach any goals he sets for himself. McDowell is a world-known surgeon who strives to become president of his department, hurting not only his family but also co-workers on his way to success. In this riveting story, you are taken into the world of not only medical politics but the destruction of a man’s reputation and life. As you are not only shown McDowell’s experiences, but also the in-depth lives of his three wives, and many children. This is a story filled with affairs, lies, deception, and even murder. All of it weaving together for an unforgettable tale with an unimaginable ending.
This book was a nice steady burn from beginning to end. It sucked me in from the beginning, never letting up as each event unfolded before my eyes. I enjoyed the depth of McDowell, even though he was an extremely unlikeable character, he showed a great deal of development as the story unraveled. I liked how each character had their chapters, giving the reader in-depth knowledge of their lives, experiences, and thoughts. The storyline was well developed, showing the year in many chapters, keeping you in the loop of how much time has passed. I loved the plot twist, one that deals solely with one of McDowell’s children. This was a riveting tale, one that I hard time putting down.
There was not much that I did not like about this book. It was well edited, gripping, and suspenseful. There were was not a lot of foul language used, minimal sex scenes, and little violence. What was presented was done so in the most respectful of ways, giving depth and measure to the characters. The only complaint that I can even muster would be that there were moments during the reading that I felt a little lost. Trying to keep up with the characters was a bit tricky at first, but once I was able to remember who everyone was and in what relation they were to each other, it was extremely enjoyable and easy to get through.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed my time reading this book. I found myself rather disliking McDowell, he was written as a character who was meant to be disliked, yet one that I could not get enough of. The editing was spot on, characters, storyline, and plot all well developed as well. If you enjoy steady reads, medical or political plots, or even good suspense, this book would be something for you. A fictional tale of a not so likable man, who’s life takes on a series of events that are compelling and full of life lessons.
