I finished Sysco Volume 1-5 by Rebecca McNutt a couple of days ago. I gave myself time to digest what I read in order to give an accurate review. I am not sure how to classify this book’s genre. It could fall anywhere between fantasy, fiction, paranormal, or just plain teen. It is my opinion that it falls into all of them.

First off let me start by saying that this box set of books has so much potential. It covers everything from the fallout of bullying to what the industrial companies are doing to the Earth. I like how Rebecca shows that just because someone starts out as a bully, they do not have to choose to stay that way. This is what happens to Mandy. She teases and bullies Wendy to go into the Tar Ponds. Once Wendy goes in there, she falls in and her whole life is forever changed. Mandy is too afraid to let anyone know what happened. She does begin to change her ways immediately. In the first book, the reader gets introduced to Mandy, Sysco, and Alecto. They all have their different powers and work to save the community from a disaster.

All of the books show the teens working to save people from certain disasters. They begin working with other teens with similar powers. This gifted group has a connection to Mearth, who controls the earth. There are secrets that come out that test the bonds of friendships. Hardships are seen and overcome. Through it all, the friends stay by each other sides. This is one of the positive things about this book. It shows that something good can come from something evil.

While there were many things that I liked about this book, there were a lot of things that could be improved. I agree with Rebecca that bullying is a subject that needs to be addressed. I think this book would have benefited from having a beta reader. The prologues were filled with information about the author instead of anything to do with the book. The teenagers in the story were too easy to set off into a screaming match over the least little thing. The adults were written sounding like they had teenage mentality. I would also recommend the flood scenes be reexamined. There is no way a car can drive through water that is up to their windows. I would also recommend not rehashing the events of the previous books in every new book.

While it may seem that I did not like this book, I actually did. I am only giving it 2 out of 4 stars. This is because of redundancy and the youthful mentality of the writing style. This author shows so much promise that I do see her on a bestselling list as her writing skills improve. I will then be able to say that I have her first books.
