The book is set in the Olympic Peninsula wilderness, Washington State. While preparing for an upcoming camping trip to visit his grandfather's grave, Tom and his friends suddenly receive an unexpected visitor. Sarah Cooley is Tom's granddaughter that he didn't know the existence of. With the pressure of his friend, William, he decides to take Sarah, his granddaughter, along. Sarah is a disgruntled pre-teen who wants nothing to do with the wilderness and grumbles along the entire way. During the journey, they find an artifact that may question the origins of Native Americans in the US. After a disagreement with Tom, she walks off and disappears into the wilderness. The rest of the party, including search and rescue, searches for Sarah. After several days they begin to give up hope in finding her alive. Suddenly during a storm, Sarah reappears, dirty and a lot worse for wear. After recovering, she begins to tell the party a fantastic tale of her adventures. The park and the community are under threat of mining. The presence of the artifact poses a threat to those who wish to mine in the park. Suddenly the group finds themselves in trouble. This story contains many adventures and interesting characters.

Charlie Sheldon has managed to write a fantastic story with Native American folklore woven in. Usually, when you read a book you have an idea of where the storyline is going. However, the author kept me on my toes and enticed me to keep reading to discover what happens next. This book was a delight to read and I would like to read the rest of the series. The book was original and well written. The editing was well done and contained few errors.

It was a challenge to find any negative aspects of this book. Strong Heart is part of a trilogy, as a result, the ending has loose ends. If you are a person that prefers a book with a definite ending this book is not for you. William and Sarah are the points of view in this book. I personally enjoy multiple points of view to get to know the characters better but this is my preference.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I would give the book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to my fellow adventurers who enjoy learning about other cultures and getting lost in the wilderness.

This book is suitable for teenagers and young adults. There are some violent scenes in the book and some profane language that might be off-putting for some people.
