Review by mbhuibregtse -- Another Poor Cow
In Another Poor Cow, by Martins Agbonlahor, Onaiwu is the only surviving child of her 3 siblings. Further, she is a child from the spirit world and the village of Alalo is transfixed on curing her of her extraterrestrial curse. Expected to die before 10, she defied all odds in the village of Alalo and is cured by the sorceress of the spirit world. Ready to take on the world, Onaiwu seeks a fresh start by wanting an education in the city. However, her parents have betrothed her to ensure she follows traditional values in the village. Devastated, Onaiwu flees the village to defy her parents' wishes on her own. Will the city bring Onaiwu to her dreams, or will it end her life?
I loved the complex story because of the interesting layers. I felt connected to Onaiwu as she was pulled in unwanted directions by all of the characters. Further, the supplemental characters were strongly developed. Every character had their own motive which was explained in detail, building empathy for the reader. I was so invested in Onaiwu getting what she deserved, that I was audibly gasping during the change of events. I felt that I learned a lot about arranged marriages and the traditional values of a rural village. This expanded my horizons and broadened my perspective as I seek to learn more.
I was a little confused about the connection between the purpose of Onaiwu being supernatural and how that adds to the story. I don't have negative feelings about it, I just didn’t really understand the development of it adding to the plot. Was it to show the adversity she faced? Was it to deem her as special and worthy of an education? Again, it is fine as extra information and character development, and I don't have many complaints!
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is my favorite I have ever reviewed. The book had no noticeable errors and was written in perfect detail. There is one sexually triggering scene around genital mutilation and a couple of sexual scenes. I am still thinking of coming down from the shock of it days after completion. I didn’t see the plot twists coming, and was engaged throughout the book. I feel like I learned about different cultures, my perspective was challenged, and I found adventure and suspense throughout the read. This book checked so many boxes for me.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys learning about different countries and cultures. As Americans, we can be so stuck in our ways, and this read is extremely eye-opening to different cultures. Further, it is an exhilarating read with multiple plot twists, I feel like many people will love it! I believe that many people can take something away from it. A must-read!
