Reccomend me a great Vampire Novel

Post by Slaytanic »

Hey there.

I need a great Vampire novel for inspiration for a piece of art I am trying to finalise.

If possible, it has to be set in ancient times or in other words not modern. Dark Ages, middle ages, etc.

I am a bit sceptical about Anne Rice after trying to read one of her novels, as it came across a bit homo-erotic for my taste.

Thx guys!

:)

Sorry, if I'm stating the obvious, but have you read "Dracula"? Somehow so many people who love the vampire books never seem to get to this one. I say this, not as an assumption. It's what my experience working in bookstores has proven.

Also, for the gothic feel, although not vampire novels, "Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde" and "The Lodger"

Good Luck!

There's quite a bit of "color" for a vampire novel.

There is a free vampire e-book called "Leaving the Light."

Google "new free books" to get to the New Free Books website. It's about a third of the way down that long page. I have not read it, so I don't know about the setting or if it would be much of an inspiration, but it's legal. All of those books have been released by their own authors.

"The Phoenix Warrior" is good. But it's currently just available online. The link is below. There are quite a few moments where vampires play a huge role (spoiler: Chapter4). It has a gothic feel and there are some cringing bloody fight scenes but I believe it has what it takes to be a work of art. The author is Emorah Slaytron.

I'm a fan of The House of the Vampire - it's a classic in the genre.

Dracula

I read it a month before all of these sh*t-heads at my college starting reading 'Twilight'. I get pretty angry whenever I hear about 'Twilight' now.

How about Let The Right One In by John Lindqvist. Iv seen the movie and now am reading the book. As always the book is much better and you find more things out about the characters.

You could also check out the later books in the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley.... It turns more into a feudalism inspired version of an alternate universe with a bunch of vampires who have their own castles and so on... You can check out the series on amazon under
Brian Lumley Vampire World Trilogy
These are like books 6-9 or something like that...

Its a pretty brutal series... with your Slayer reference in your name, im sure you will find some inspiration from it...and maybe a bit of love and awe too... :)

The Anita Blake Trilogy is well done. Though it isn't based in ancient times, but you might be able to find some inspiration from the series. I'm sure Anne Rice's books might have some sexual areas you might be uncomfortable, but I would still recommend them. Specifically I'd direct you to Pandora, The Queen of the Damned and The Vampire Lestat. Of those choices Pandora would be a great bet because it might have the best balance of what you are looking for.
