Where Somebody Waits is a wonderful novel written by Margaret Kaufman. It tells about love in shades of grey. The story is centered on Ruby Daniels who married a man older than her and her affair with her high school sweetheart. Nathan “Bubba” Davidson, a Jewish store owner, was captivated by Ruby upon meeting her the first time and married her hastily as to avoid any objections by his family because Ruby doesn’t share the same religious belief as they had. Ruby was also intrigued by the older man and didn’t pass up the opportunity to marry such a man that exudes the stability and comfort she had long to find. After being married for a year, an old flame came back to town and hoped to pick up the relationship they had only to find out that she’s married. John Clay, who left town to join the army, was not only disappointed but was feeling incredulous that she could not wait for him as well. The attraction between the two lovers was palpable. Now Ruby, being married struggles with the conflicting emotions she had between the two men. She had longed to have a child and finding that her husband can’t give her one, she hadn’t resisted the temptation brought by John Clay. She was torn between the love she had for her husband and the sexual attraction she still had with her former lover.
“Love is like a Ferris wheel, you’re on top of the world but when it was down, you have to pay the price.”
I particularly liked this paragraph because I agree with the author. Love is not all rainbows and sunshine. You have to make a lot of sacrifices to make a relationship works. And sometimes those sacrifices we’ve made would make us or break us. Love is always a debatable subject. It varies by one’s principle and beliefs but sometimes the circumstances that would present to us would alter those beliefs and would lead us to act against our principles.
I found this book intriguing and entertaining because of the plot. It’s a leisurely read that would still captivate you because of its colorful characters. It’s a book full of lessons of love and life choices.
While I enjoyed reading this, I found it also disturbing because of its possible influence to the reader. While I saw the lessons that the author would like to share are profound, I don’t think this would be such a great novel to be read by most that is having the same situation in their life. They may be encouraged to do the same thing. Although this is a novel, I do believe that readers find some bit of advice and inspiration in the books that they read.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. Even if I personally found it exceptional, some may find fault of the portrayed morality of the characters. While I may appreciate the point of the story, I don’t have the same opinion that having an affair and justifying it by saying love has to do with it.
